No Mercy: Smyrna finishes off dominant run with 4th title

NEWARK, Del. – The only question left following Smyrna’s 52-7 thrashing of Dover in the 3A state title game is whether this was head coach Mike Judy’s best squad.

Smyrna outscored Cape Henlopen, Middletown, and Dover 150-7 over their three-game playoff run, capturing their fourth title in eight seasons.

Dover kept the Eagles at bay for a little over one quarter of play, but the floodgates opened in the second.

Touchdowns by Nolan Fretz, Markell Holman, and Yamir Knight (twice) pushed the Smyrna lead to 28-7 by halftime.

And they did not let up.

Knight was apart of two third quarter touchdowns, a pass to Hollman and one on the ground to start the running clock.

Smyrna dominated across the stat sheet. Whether it was in total yards, 390-99, passing yards, 253-60, or first downs, 19-8.
