New grant funding expands behavioral health services in Worcester County
BERLIN, Md.- One non-profit is receiving grant funding to expand behavioral health services for those in need in Worcester County.
Over the course of three years, Worcester Youth & Family Counseling Services will receive $225,000 thanks to a new partnership with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield.
Funds will allow the non-profit to hire additional mental health specialists, specifically addressing the need for services in marginalized groups like youth of color and youth who identify as LGBTQ+.
Executive Director Dr. Jennifer Leggour says the pandemic highlighted the need for more local mental health services.
Dr. Leggour adds that most cases they see involve clients battling with things like depression or anxiety, with some clients staying in treatment as long as a year. “We have about 100 people waiting for treatment right now. With the changes, presenting problems, and the severity we’re really trying to problem solve and find a way to get more providers here,” Dr. Leggour said.
“Not only are we trying to recruit more professionals, but we’re also trying to take care of the professionals that are here so they’re well and healthy. Then, they can help people become well and healthy.”
The funding will also go to support a wellness room for that additional staff and for the first-time ever an internship program.
The non-profit was one of 19 awardees, part of a larger $7.9 million investment from CareFirst with a goal of improving behavioral health outcomes for youth in the Mid-Atlantic region.
