Brandywine Valley SPCA to hold Mega Adoption Event in Delaware
HARRINGTON, Del. – The Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) will be hosting its tenth Mega Adoption Event in partnership with Petco Love and BOBS from Skechers™. Nine shelters from eight states will bring more than 1,000 homeless cats and dogs to the event to find homes.
The Mega Adoption Event will bring together in a single venue more than 1,000 homeless cats and dogs hoping to find homes for the holidays.
Adoptable pets will include big dogs, small dogs, puppies, kittens, adults and seniors. The adoption fee is just $35 for any pet, and that fee includes spaying/neutering, current vaccinations and microchipping.
This will be the BVSPCA’s tenth Mega Adoption Event and the first return to a single large venue in three years. The first Mega took place in December 2016. To date, BVSPCA’s Mega have found homes for more than 8,000 homeless pets, each one placing over 1,000 dogs and cats with families over a two-day period.
“Folks might be suprised, about 20-percent of the animals in shelters tend to be what you would consider more purebred animals, and then there are all of the great one-of-a-kind mixes,” explained Linda Torelli, Chief Marketing Officer with BVSPCA. “We’ll have small dogs, large dogs, puppies, seniors, and same in the case of cats.”
In addition, the BVSPCA has shared its expertise in large-scale adoption events to lead two successful Mega Adoption Events in Houston, Texas. The most recent was in September of this year. Texas has the second highest euthanasia rate in the country, so these events have been essential to saving more lives.
More than 2,500 homeless pets found families across those two Houston Mega events. That brings the BVSPCA’s Mega influence to more than 10,000 homeless pets matched with families in its Mega history.
“We also have animals that are coming from shelters that have very difficult communities with high euthanasian rates. Texas for instance has the second highest euthanasia rate in the country,” Torelli told our Rob Petree. “We’re bringing in about a hundred pets on Friday on one of the flights from Texas.”
Adopters should bring a leash and collar for a dog adoption (also available or purchase), a carrier for a cat (cardboard carriers will be available for purchase), a valid id, and the adoption fee. The BVSPCA recommends bringing any dogs in the home to meet a potential new canine family member, and outdoor meet-and-greet areas will be available.
The event will take place this weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington.
