Assateague to offer online OSV permit sales starting in January

BERLIN, Md. – Assateague Island National Seashore will soon begin selling Over Sand Vehicle Permits online.

We’re told this will help streamline the OSV sales process for visitors to the island, as permits can be purchased in advance online and then picked up at the park office within 10 days of purchase. OSV permits will continue to be sold in person via online computer stations located at the North Beach Ranger Station in the Maryland District and the Toms Cove Visitor Center in the Virginia District.

Online OSV permit sales will begin on January 4, 2023. You can go online to purchase and choose which office you would like to pick up your permit from.

If you choose to buy your permit in person, you can do so at the North Beach Ranger Station in the Maryland District between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., 7 days per week, or at the Toms Cove Visitor Center in the Virginia District from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday through Monday from December through January, or 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 7 days per week, from April through November.

Both annual OSV permits are available. The OSV Permit costs $110 and allows 24-hour access to the Maryland OSV area, but the permittee must be actively fishing from midnight to 5 a.m., as no camping or sleeping is allowed. Access during Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge hours to the Virginia OSV is also allowed. The Bullpen Permit is $200 and allows 24-hour access to the Maryland OSV area. The permittee must have a hard-shelled, slide-in camper with an attached and enclosed toilet with a permanently installed waste storage tank that can hold two days’ worth of wastewater. Permitted vehicles may park overnight in the Bullpen area.
