CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Three juveniles were taken into custody early Friday morning following an armed carjacking and police chase.

Shortly after 5 a.m., officers with the Cambridge Police Department were alerted of a vehicle pursuit traveling towards Cambridge from the Wicomico County area that originally initiated from an armed carjacking in Ocean City. Surrounding law enforcement agencies from Worcester and Wicomico Counties initiated a pursuit on two involved vehicles, one of which was stopped in Wicomico County, while the second continued into Dorchester County.

Law enforcement agencies in Dorchester County assisted in the pursuit. As the vehicle approached the Cambridge jurisdiction, officers were able to utilize stop sticks in an attempt to end the pursuit. The use of the stop sticks was successful, but the vehicle still tried to elude police by failing to stop, traveling on several roadways in Cambridge before ultimately ending up in the Black Water Landing development. While in the area of Caribbean Avenue and Madison Avenue, police say multiple occupants got out of the vehicle while it was still in motion and fled on foot. The vehicle then continued through a barrier fence and ended up in a drainage ditch where it caught on fire and there was a subsequent explosion. Firefighters responded and extinguished the fire.

A K-9 unit and other officers attempted a K-9 track of suspects, leading police to locate a 14-year-old juvenile on Race Street in the area of East Appleby. The juvenile was found to be a reported missing person from Baltimore and subsequently transported to Easton.

Cambridge Police then received a report from a concerned citizen in the 500 block of Goldsborough Avenue regarding an unknown subject walking around their property. Following a search of the area, officers found a subject hiding in a vehicle in a driveway. The subject did not have permission to be on the property or in the vehicle. During the encounter, police say the subject was not compliant and was trying to lock the doors of the vehicle. After a short period of time, officers talked the subject into unlocking the vehicle and stepping out of the vehicle. At that time, police found the subject to be in possession of a quantity of Cannabis to indicate distribution, multiple items of stolen property related to the incident in Ocean City, and a loaded handgun that was reported to be stolen. The subject was identified as a 17-year-old from Baltimore, and he was taken into custody.

Police were then called to respond to Walmart for a report of a juvenile at the location covered in mud. Contact was made with the 12-year-old, who police determined to have been involved in the incident. The juvenile was also from the Baltimore area.

The 12-year-old and 14-year-old were later returned to their parents/guardians. The 17-year-old was turned over to the Ocean City Police Department to be charged accordingly.
