UPDATE: DSP investigating fatal crash in Dover

DOVER, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash in the Dover area.

Just after 8 a.m. Thursday, police say a Freightliner Tractor pulling a loaded flatbed cargo trailer was traveling southbound in the right lane of Route 1, south of the Exit 104 ramp. For unknown reasons, the tractor traveled off the west edge of the roadway and down a grass embankment before hitting several trees.

Police say the operator of the tractor, a 45-year-old Delaware man, was not properly restrained. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The roadway was closed for roughly five hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
