Police: Juveniles charged after stealing vehicle
DOVER, Del. – Dover Police say two juveniles have been charged after they allegedly stole a vehicle.
The investigation began just after 8 a.m. Friday, when the victim, who lives in the unit block of Liberty Drive, reported that her 2017 Hyundai Elantra had been stolen. At approximately 12:50 p.m., the victim contacted police again to report that her vehicle was in the area of Stevenson Drive. Officers responded to the area and located the vehicle on Fair Wind Place.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle, at which time it accelerated over a grassy area and fled. The vehicle continued fleeing, hitting a City of Dover fire hydrant, and eventually caused an accident at the intersection of White Oak Road and Bay Tree Drive when it failed to yield the right of way to a 2015 Honda Civic. Police were able to take the 16-year-old male driver and 17-year-old passenger into custody. As a result of the crash, both juveniles and three other individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Once the juveniles were released from the hospital, they were taken to Dover PD. The 16-year-old driver was charged with theft over $1500, disregarding a police officer signal, second degree conspiracy, theft under $1500, criminal mischief under $1000, driving without a valid license, failure to yield right of way, failure to stop at a stop sign, and careless driving. He was released on his own recognizance to his guardian.
