Local non-profit serving older adults in need of assistance, seeking more partnerships
FRUITLAND, Md. -Serving others is something that comes as second nature for Trenace Josiah, founder of the non-profit Sponsor A Senior Inc.
It started with helping just one older adult in need and then. “God gave me the vision of ‘hey this could be something bigger’ and could help a lot more people with this same model,” Josiah said.
Sponsor A Senior’s goal is to do just that.
Community members can nominate a senior in need and/or sponsor them with a $50 monthly donation that gives them access to things like prescription assistance or food that will be delivered right to their doorstep.
It’s a need Josiah says is now greater than ever due to things like record high inflation. “They would go in with their list of groceries and with everything almost doubling, its reducing the number of groceries that they can get,” Josiah said.
“They still have to get their prescriptions, they still have housing costs, and whatever other expenses they have. Everything is just so expensive now.”
The program is changing the lives of people like James Buie, who says he’s now thankful he doesn’t have to worry where his next meal will come from. “I could’ve been hungry, but God didn’t allow that because he sent her to me,” Buie said.
“It helps you be at peace not having to worry.”
They aren’t doing it alone, as Josiah tells me they’re receiving a helping hand from many community partners who all have a common goal: keeping smiles on faces like Mr. James. “I knew that I was going to have some to eat every month. So, you be happy. Happiness is good,” Buie said.
Josiah tells us they’re looking to increase that monthly donation of that $50 to offset the rising cost of groceries.
They’re looking to spread awareness of their efforts to help more older adults in need.
