ACLU Delaware to rollout new initiative providing LGBTQ+ students more support

LEWES, Del.- The ACLU Delaware will soon kick off a new initiative to bring more support to LGBTQ+ students across the first state.

It’s called the ‘Know Your Rights Guide’ and looks to educate parents, teachers, and students on their 1st Amendment rights.

The ACLU of Delaware says over the last several years they’ve gotten an increasing number of complaints about LGBTQ youth facing discrimination in school.

This includes them not being addressed by their preferred pronouns, being denied playing certain sports, or following a dress code that doesn’t fit with the gender they identify with.

This November, the non-profit will roll-out the campaign by hosting a public discussion and encourage the community to come out and learn more. “Luckily in Delaware we do have several school districts that are very supportive of LGBTQ students, but they still experience discrimination in different parts of Delaware every single day,” ACLU Delaware Executive Director Mike Brickner said.

“Having these wonderful organizations step in and say we believe this is an important issue and we have your back young people who are coming out and living authentically as yourselves is such an important message.”

That event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 1st at the Lewes Public Library at 5:30 p.m.
