Sussex Tech High School upgrades bus camera system

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Sussex Technical High School buses may look a little different this school year. The Sussex Technical Board of Education approved the purchase of a new camera system.

The new system includes two cameras, one covering the inside, and the second one is covering the outside near the stop-arm where it’s facing drivers rear license plates. We’re told this tool is a continuing effort to provide safety and security for their students and staff. It’s also helpful to keep drivers accountable.

“So, it’s not just a local or a state issue it is actually nationwide where people just ignore the stop signs and unfortunately if they were to ignore it and a student were crossing to get to their bus stop in front of them it could have tragic results,” Hud Athey, Director of Administrative Services, said.

The camera system also utilizes a GPS system that can pinpoint locations of incidents and car statistics including speed and brakes. The principle of Sussex Tech said one big way this new system is different from their old one is it’s one-universal network for their building.

“Before we had several cameras to manage and different keys to access different cameras and every second that’s delayed in reviewing something is not in our favor; so having this new system is a tremendous boost to running a safe and orderly school,” Matthew Donovan, Sussex Tech Principle, said.

Sussex Tech leaders told us not only will this be a plus for students it will also help bus drivers to know they have some added security in monitoring the buses.
