Plans moving ahead to break ground for a new Millsboro Police Department

MILLSBORO, Del.- The Millsboro Police Department is moving forward towards breaking ground on a new facility.

Chief Brian Calloway said the process of trying to bring this space to life has been a long. Currently, the police department is housed in an old post office, they came into the building in 1996. The building is equipped to hold around 10 to 12 officers, but currently they have 18 sworn officers and they are authorized for 21.
Chief Calloway said while space is a challenge, they need more room for their evidence and to conduct soft interviews for victims.

“It’s been a journey, we’ve designed multiple buildings and when doing this you can’t think about a building that’s just for today, you have to be thinking about where are you going to be 25 to 30 years now,” Chief Calloway said.

Also, when thinking of a new building they wanted something that was going to be welcoming to the community. Chief Calloway added they hope this new facility can be used as a recruitment tool.

“It is not a secret right now, that not a lot of people are looking for law enforcement as a career opportunity,” Chief Calloway said. “Our hope is when we see young persons that are interested in this as a career that maybe that they can see that this an upcoming town with a new facility and we’re hoping that people would want to join our department and be a part of that.”

We’re told the new building will have a community training room, office for victim services advocate, a larger area for patrol officers, office for administrative staff, a sally port, and a state-of-the art processing room.

The groundbreaking of the facility will be on October 4 at 1 p.m. on West Railroad Avenue.
