Mayor, city council seats up for grabs in upcoming Delmar municipal election
DELMAR, Del.- The town of Delmar is looking to fill several seats with its upcoming municipal election next month.
Mayor Mike Houilhan is not seeking re-election, stating he was ready to step away from the role.
Two council member seats are also up grabs.
Qualifications for those roles include being a U.S. citizen, being 21 years old, and residing in the state of Delaware at least one year prior to the general election.
We spoke with Town Manager Jeff Fleetwood who says as of Wednesday afternoon there’s two candidates for mayor and three for the council positions.
He say that makes it a historic election for Delmar. “It’s my understanding that its been well on access of 15 years since there’s been a true election i.e. where there’s been challengers if you will,” Fleetwood said.
“Anytime where there’s change in leadership there’s going to be some apprehension on folks part but the neat thing with you having elected council as well is that there’s continuity.”
Other qualifications include no felony convictions, being a qualified voter in Delmar, and residing in the town at least 6 months prior to the election.
Interested candidates have until Monday, September 19th to file at the Town Hall by 4:30 p.m.
