Maryland “Move Over” Law Expansion Begins October

Maryland –  The “Move Over” law was originally enacted in 2010 and required drivers to move over a lane or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, law enforcement, tow trucks, or utility vehicles stopped on the side of the road.

Now the expansion requires drivers to do the same for all vehicles stopped on the side of the road that has a warning signal displayed, which could be hazard lights, traffic cones, road flares, or anything being used to alert drivers.

Violating the law is a misdemeanor and can land a driver a $110 fine and one point on your license.

If a crash is caused the penalty is three points and a $150 fine, and the most serious punishment, if a death or major injury occurs the fine is $750 also with three points added to the driver’s license

This expansion goes into effect on October 1st.
