Founder of Berlin non-profit throws his hat in the ring for a spot on the town council
BERLIN, Md.- In Berlin, we checked in with a candidate running for a seat in the municipal election.
Tony Weeg is running for the District 4 seat against incumbent Dean Burrell. A few years ago, Weeg ran for the At-Large Councilmember spot, but didn’t win.
Since then, he said he’s learned a lot about how he can help the town. He wants to bring a new level of communication and technology to the council. As well as, building better relationships between the council and town employees.
“Sitting back at council meetings and listening to council meetings it’s even more frustrating, so I would really like to have a seat at the table so I can sort of help my friends who are already on the council, maybe bring in some new ways of communicating and some new technology that could help us,” Weeg said.
“One of the other things I hope to bring to town is a level of transparency and representation for a slice of Berlin that feels like they have not been represented very well at all for the last X number of years,” Weeg said. “So, I hope to be that communication piece to make sure that the town is not blindsided and everybody knows what’s going on as it’s happening rather than after the fact.”
Weeg said progressing on infrastructure projects and fixing flooding issues would also be on his agenda if he were able to work on the council.
“We’ve got some pumping stations and some water issues that we are looking at a year away before we even get the equipment and we’ve got a water director that says we sort of need to get these things as soon as possible,” Weeg said.
Weeg said some characteristics that make him a good candidate is that he communicates well, he studies up on the local history, he’s good with technology, and he knows how to plan and accomplish projects. As the founder of the non-profit, We Heart Berlin, he said he’s brought projects to the town like the Table Tennis Courts.
