Former City Council member is eyeing Wicomico County Council District 1 seat

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.- 47ABC caught up with a candidate running for the Wicomico County Council District 1 seat Monday. Shanie Shields is the Democratic candidate running against Republican candidate, Kyle Cole.

Shields was born in the area and loves the community that’s here. She says she is a believer in helping in any way she can. If elected, Shields would like to see the County address homelessness and build more affordable housing, as well as, more communication between the County Council and residents.

“One of the things that I believe in is communication; I think when you get in office you have to communicate with people not just your district, but you need to communicate with the whole county,” Shields said. “When you go to meetings, when you have work sessions, and things to discuss in work sessions, that if something is going to effect peoples lives, you don’t wait until it comes to a meeting or wait until they hear it on the news, you tell them about it, you communicate with people. That’s the main things, one of the problems, we do not communicate with our constituents and then you have to realize what your position is; you are the servant of the people, not the other way around.”

Shields said she would also like to address mental health issues in a holistic approach and help the senior citizen population; specifically helping them access things like transportation.

Shanie says she’s served over 10 years on the City Council and through that experience she’s built relationships, which she says is a plus because she believes in working together to move projects forward.
