Henlopen Football Preview: Delmar Wildcats
DELMAR, Del. – The Wildcats are preparing for an adjustment period in 2022. Head coach David Hearn says his team is young and the coaching staff will need to see who can play.
Delmar finished 7-3 in 2021, then blew out Newark 42-7 in the first round of the DIAA playoffs before losing, 21-20, in a heartbreaker in overtime against Wilmington Friends.
“We’ve had a string of playoff teams,” Hearn said. “They’re going to be thrown right in.”
There are some big holes to fill, such as how to replace Jaylin Warner and Trent Kemp’s combined 240-plus yards per game in the backfield.
The team only has one starter returning from last season, all-conference tackle Derrick Fooks
Players to look for this year to step up include quarterback Gavin Powell, running back and defensive back Takai Hugee, running back and linebacker Brandon Turner and running back and defensive back Jalen Johnson
All of these players have playoff experience, but now it’s about finding out who else is going to take a step forward.
