Bayside Football Preview: Kent Island Buccaneers
STEVENSVILLE, Md. – Kent Island finished the 2021 football season as one of the final eight remaining in the state of Maryland. The Bucs are going through a tough training camp this summer, in hopes that it will give them that extra strength when they need it most.
Bryon Sofinowski takes over the reigns at head coach, and his second stint as Kent Island’s leader. He believes the key to success for this season is staying together as a team and playing mistake free football, adding that his kids should be able to compete with a lot of teams.
The U.S. Marine has brought new intensity to camp that his players have not seen in years past.
“There’s a lot more intensity,” explained all-conference running back and linebacker Kasey Heath. “You have to be on your A-game 100 percent of the time. And if you mess up Coach Sof is definitely going to let you know.”
“I tested them in the winter,” said Sofinowski, “and they’ve really followed through and stepped up and they’re doing their thing right now.”
Heath explained that he feels the tough practices in the summer will help in the fourth quarter of games, or later in the season when they need to get over the hump.
Kent Island returns three starters on defense and four on offense. When a team sees that type of turnover it’s up to the veterans to lead by example, and so far that’s exactly what’s happening in Stevensville.
Sofinowski has some high praise for the veterans who are leading the way for the underclassmen.
“What those older guys are portraying, our young guys are doing in practice. They are leading by the front, and I think that’s our best attribute right now.”
The Bucs have a new quarterback, Tommy McAndrews, who has great reviews out of camp, and opposing offenses can expect the same gritty defense from these Buccaneers.
