Weather Tidbits: Sundog Formation

This Weather Tidbits explores how sundogs are formed. They occur when sunlight is refracted by hexagonal (6 sided) shaped ice crystals from a cirrus or cirrostratus clouds; where the sunlight is bent 22° as it passes through the ice crystal and reaches our eyes. The bending of this light results in an optical illusion known as a sun dog with the illusion of 3 suns or mock suns in the sky.
