Weather Tidbits: Maritime Polar Air Mass

This Weather Tidbits discusses the maritime polar air mass. The maritime polar air mass or mP is a cool, moist & unstable air mass. It is called Pacific or Atlantic air; associated with rain/snow over mountains in the West and Nor’easters on the East Coast. The air mass originates from Alaska into the Pacific; where it actually becomes a stable & dry air mass once it passes east of the Rockies bringing nice weather. The air mass on the East Coast tends to be colder and less traveled but also less common than its Pacific counterpart; as it steered by northeasterly winds while moving southwest.
