Weather Tidbits: Air Mass Classification

This Weather Tidbits deals with what is an air mass and how they are classified. An air mass is a large body of air that has similar horizontal temperature & moisture characteristics. Air masses are classified from where they originate or source regions. Capital letters of an air mass indicate the temperature origin; while the lowercase letter indicates the humidity origin. A capital A means Arctic originating from north of 70° N, capital P stands for polar which originates north or south of 60°; while a capital T means tropical which comes from within 25° of the Equator. A lowercase c means continental or over land indicating dry air, while a lowercase m means maritime or over water indicating moist air.
