DOVER, Del. – Dover Police and City of Dover Fire Marshals are investigating an arson at the Target store on John Hunn Brown Road.

We’re told just after 9 p.m. Sunday, multiple agencies responded to assist in controlling the fire and ventilating the building. The fire was controlled, and crews were able to leave the scene by 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Police say evidence obtained at this point in the investigation has shown that the fire was intentionally set in the linen section near the center of the store. The store was quickly evacuated and no injuries were reported. Preliminary damage estimates range between $3-$4 million in merchandise damage. Estimated damages to the structure are not readily available at this time.

Dover Police Sargeant Mark Hoffman says that there is no suspect information at this time, but that further updates will be provided as they become available.

“There’s no doubt. It’s one of the most shocking cases I’ve seen in 18 years on the job. It’s one of the more disturbing cases that I’ve seen in my career. Just to think of the potential dangers of the people that were in there, whether they were shoppers or employees. It’s a huge risk, and very brazen,” said Hoffman.

Police are asking anyone that may have information on this fire to contact Dover PD at 302-736-7130 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
