U.S Senator Tom Carper sends special ‘thank you’ to first responders after barge fire

BOWERS BEACH, Del. – Senator Tom Carper of Delaware visited the Bowers Volunteer Fire Company Friday afternoon to thank first responders for their role in putting out a barge fire last week.

On May 23rd,  The Coast Guard and local fire departments responded to a barge fire in the Delaware Bay around 1 a.m.

After more than 24-hours, Bowers Beach firefighters along with other agencies were able to put out the massive fire.

Senator Carper says he wanted to thank the firefighters for their bravery and decided it would be best to do it in person. “Some very smart, very creative fire fighters said we have a pretty good idea of how to put that fire out, save lives, and probably reduce the damage and threat,” Senator Carper said.

“There’s three words you can never say too much: please and thank you. Today we’re going to say thank you.”

The cause of that fire is still under investigation.
