Ocean City creates new, unique plans for Independence Day celebrations

OCEAN CITY, Md.-Town officials have new plans for visitors and residents this 4th of July.

This comes after officials received news the firework company contracted to provide fireworks for two of their shows backed out. They were informed last week that this was due to lack of certified personnel and inventory. In response, the town scrambled to make a new plan.

“It was very disappointing that the contractor pulled out at the last minute the way they did, but I’m really proud of our staff of putting this together,” City Manager Terry McGean said. “I think it’s going to be a great a show and it’s going to be something really unique.”

The new plan includes fresh dates, several unique lineups, and a free concert by American Idol Star Jay Copeland. McGean says at Northside Park residents and visitors have two opportunities to celebrate on July 3rd and July 5th. On July 3rd, an intimate Independence Day celebration is planned at Northside Park during Sundae’s in the Park, featuring a concert at 7 p.m. and a condensed firework show at 9 p.m. On July 5th, at 8 p.m., American Idol Star Jay Copeland will take the stage at Northside Park.

We’re also told downtown on July 5th the town will feature music starting at 8 p.m. and fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.

“You know this is a very important week for the city, we know a lot of people are coming for the Fourth of July week,” McGean said. “We wanted to make sure we still had some really great events for them and not just our visitors, but for all the people who live in Ocean City as well.”
