Celebrating Cambridge Harbor project coming to life with demolition ceremony

CAMBRIDGE, Md.- A groundbreaking ceremony took place Friday morning for the Cambridge Harbor project.

This will be a 35-acre waterfront redevelopment area alongside the confluences of Cambridge Creek and the Choptank River. The redevelopment site includes the former Dorchester General Hospital and Governor’s Hall. Cambridge Harbor will feature a mix of new commercial development, green space, bike trails, housing, and more. The idea to re-develop this space has been in the works for years, but it’s finally coming to life with help from local and state partners.

“We all do move forward together and as one of the speakers said when you do it that way you really get things done, quickly and well,” Matt Leonard, Executive Director of Cambridge Waterfront Development Incorporated, said.

The State of Maryland provided approximately $8 million for the project, which is managed by Cambridge Waterfront Development, Inc. (CWDI). We’re told total redevelopment costs are estimated at $250 million. State and local leaders are hoping that the revitalized harbor will promote Cambridge as an attractive destination for tourists while providing economic, cultural, and recreational opportunities for residents.

“This is a real exciting project, it’s going to be a wonderful addition to Cambridge,” Governor Larry Hogan said.

We’re told at the end of this year, demolition will be complete. In the next month, they will issue a request for proposals to try to get developers and investors involved.
