Cape Henlopen wins second baseball crown in thrilling fashion

WILMINGTON, Del. – Cape Henlopen capped off a season for the ages with their 4-1 victory over Appoquinimink Monday night at Frawley Stadium in the DIAA baseball championship.

Close calls and goose eggs were the theme in the early innings, as Cape starter Josh Reinhold and Appo starter Aidan Deakins allowed base runners, but escaped without any damage.

The Vikings broke through in the third with a Brenn Scott RBI single, but that was canceled out by a Jaguar sac fly in the fourth.

Cape was given a second chance in the sixth inning, when a bobble at shortstop with two outs on a ground ball kept the inning alive. Austin Rhue scored on a wild pitch, and Nick Cox drove in a run and scored on an RBI triple, followed by an error.

Reinhold allowed just one run while working into the seventh, but was relieved when he reached his pitch limit.

Brogan Evick came on for the save and kept the Jaguars, striking out the final batter of the game.

The victory is the 20th in a row for the Vikings to close out the season. The title is their second in program history (2018).
