“I was relieved:” Del Tech graduate happy to finally be able to walk for graduation

DELAWARE- One Felton resident is celebrating sealing the deal and walking the graduation stage. Kasie Bell got her degree in Drug and Alcohol Counseling and Human Services at Delaware Technical Community College, in 2020.

Due to COVID-19, her 2020 graduation was changed to a virtual ceremony. Bell created a petition for a postponed graduation ceremony, but it was not successful. She also said she reached out to state representatives to try and help. Bell said she later learned that Del Tech is including 2020 and 2021 graduates in this year’s in-person graduation ceremony.

“I had started to accept that and then once I received the email that they were going to include us this year, I was relieved and I was happy because it really means a lot to me to walk across the stage and for my son to see me walk across that stage,” Bell said.

Bell said she thinks other schools should follow Del Tech’s example because she feels everybody deserves to walk across the stage after all their hard work. She also said the pandemic should have taught schools to be prepared and plan ahead, and include students in big decisions like not having a traditional graduation.
