Digital MD driver’s license now available to use at select airport security checkpoints

MARYLAND—The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration announced the launch of Maryland Mobile ID.

This will give you the option to add your driver’s license or state ID card to Apple Wallet. You’ll then be able to use it on your iPhone or Apple Watch at select airport security checkpoints, including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. MDOT MVA says they’re hoping this can provide some additional security in terms of protecting your private information.

“You know when you give over that physical license, you’re giving all your information, your personal, private information to somebody you don’t know,” Chrissy Nizer, MDOT MVA Administrator said. “They probably don’t need all that information to complete whatever transaction you’re trying to do; even TSA, frankly, they don’t need everything that’s on that physical license to be able to allow you to be board the airplane.”

Maryland is the second state to implement ID’s in Apple Wallet and it’s free. This is not a replacement for your physical driver’s license and you must still carry that one with you.
