Worcester County Health Dept. looking to prevent type 2 diabetes in their neighborhoods

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md.- The Worcester County Health Department is looking for residents to help reduce the risks of diabetes in their communities.

They started a program called “Farm to Library” where they are addressing primary drivers of type 2 diabetes through community gardening, grocery store tours, health literacy, financial literacy, physical activity, cooking classes, and expanded access to the National Diabetes Prevention Program.

Through the program they’re requesting mini grant proposals from community partners to develop walking routes, create maps, and organize and lead group walks for Berlin, Pocomoke, or Snow Hill. This is all in a hopes to promote healthy lifestyles in their neighborhoods.

“We love our community, and just to be able to give something back for free it just really gives us so much pride because we want to see our community healthy and we want to see our community members being the best that they can be,” Summer Widmyer, the Public Affairs Officer, said.

Proposals are due to the health department by May 23 by 4:30 p.m. To receive an application, you can call 410-632-1100 ext. 1108. All rewards will be made after May 25, 2022 and funds must be spent by December 31, 2022.
