One dead, following deputy involved shooting
SOMERSET CO., Md. – 47ABC has just confirmed a fatal shooting involving deputies from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office in the area of Route 13 and Perry Road in Westover, Md.
Just before noon, deputies responded to a 911 call from a convenience store in Westover. According to the caller, a man had pointed a handgun at him and demanded money before taking off. Shortly after, a deputy identified a man who matched the description provided by the 911 caller.
The deputy approached the individual, where gunfire was exchanged. The man took off heading to a nearby field, near the intersection of US 13 and Perry Road.
Multiple agencies responded to this, including: deputies from Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Maryland State Police, and the Princess Anne Police Department.
When officers located the subject, he fired his handgun again. A sheriff’s deputy and a MSP trooper fired their guns, and the subject was hit. There were no other injuries.
The subject was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Their identity has not been released at this time.
Due to the nature of this incident, the investigation is now being conducted by the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.
