Legislators working to get drug benefits for state retirees

MARYLAND – Another bill that some Maryland legislators are hoping will make progress by the end of the session is House Bill 892 which reinstates prescription drug benefits for state retirees.

The bill is being brought back on the last day of the session, and one of the sponsors Delegate Johnny Mautz tells 47 ABC, that this has been an ongoing issue for a lot of retirees.

Currently, prescription drug benefits were discontinued for certain Medicare-eligible retirees who began State service on or after July first, 2011. Now, the bill would repeal this so retirees can be eligible again. “There are many people that have worked for the state of Maryland for many years and their prescription drug benefit is in jeopardy.” Del. Mautz adds, “It is a huge step forward in ensuring that we’re going to be able to at least have an opportunity to restore and protect prescription drug benefits for retirees.”

The bill is currently pending in the house appropriations committee and will be seen on Monday.
