“DMV on the Go” trailer is already proving to be a success, according to Delaware residents
SEAFORD, Del.- The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles’ “DMV on the Go” trailer is now open to Seaford residents.
“It’s just a fantastic idea whoever came up with the idea and I’m sure a lot of residents are going to take advantage of it,” Sherry Shepperson, a Seaford resident, said.
It’s a combination of a truck and a trailer that is providing DMV services. You walk up the steps into the trailer where you will be greeted by staff. There, they can help you with the same services that you get at a traditional brick and mortar building, including registration and renewals. There are some services that aren’t available on the trailer, like inspections and road exams.
“The whole point of the DMV on the Go is to bring DMV services to folks in their communities,” Jana Simpler, Director for the Division of Motor Vehicles, said. “So, the bottom line the benefit is that they don’t have to come see us at a traditional brick and mortar DMV anymore, they can come find us out in their community. We are trying to get into areas that are really walk-able.”
“It is so important to be able to deliver these services to Western Sussex; Sussex County is exploding if you will population wise, we’ve got our centralized DMV in Georgetown, but being able to have another facility and doing on the West side is really important,” Shante Hastings, Deputy Secretary and Chief Engineer for DelDot, said.
While this will open up access, we’re told there will hopefully be another plus.
“We of course experienced some delays within our DMV’s as a result of the pandemic and everybody kind of coming back to see us again, but we anticipate the ability for folks to come right here and take care of those transactions with limited or minimal delays,” Simpler said.
For Shepperson, she told 47ABC her Thursday trip to the trailer was a positive one, and not as much of a hassle as it would be to go all the way to Georgetown for the same services.
“A thousand times easier and you don’t have to go as far, this is local for all the residents you know here in Seaford or around here, it’s just fantastic ill come here forever,” Shepperson said.
DMV on the Go will run through the end of October, every Thursday in the Big Lots Plaza, in Seaford, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is another location in Wilmington, at 119 Lower Beech Street, on Tuesday’s, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
DelDot said there is potential for it to head to other areas down the line.
