Delmarva Power customers could see bill increases, public commented needed
DELAWARE – While people all over recover financially from a global pandemic, and the current inflation, Delmarva Power customers may have to tack on another monthly cost, an increase in natural gas rates.
However, public comment is needed before rates can rise and that’s why the Delaware Division of the Public Advocate Office is making sure those voices are heard.
Back in January, Delmarva Power applied with the Public Service Commission to increase its natural gas distribution by nearly $19.5 million, which means an increase to Delmarva Power customers’ monthly natural gas bills by anywhere from 16% to almost 19%. Andrew Slater with the Delaware Public Advocate office says this comes after last year’s 21% increase in natural gas. He tells 47 ABC, that they’re coming to recruit better investments for pipes in the ground and better infrastructure.
However, this financial increase in monthly bills to an already inflating economy could cause some questions. That’s why there will be a high-anticipated public comment session on Tuesday, May 3rd to give residents the space to voice their concerns which Slater says is essential.
“We are one voice for everyone but it’s great to hear individuals who can share their thoughts on what this impact means, what this increase would mean to them,” says Slater. He adds, “So for folks who aren’t able to get into Wilmington, work schedules, other priorities, making sure that they call in with their opinion or write into the public service commission.”
Slater also says these types of increases are significant for customers and if some are struggling, then making their voice heard is the best option.
The public service commission will hold their public comment session next Tuesday at the Carvel State office building in Wilmington at 6 p.m. If you can’t make it in person, Slater says to call in at 1-866-299-7945 with an access code of #5979551#.
Written comments are accepted through May 11, 2022, and may be sent by mail to Delaware Public Service Commission, Docket No. 22-0002, 861 Silver Lake Boulevard, Suite 100, Dover, DE 19904, or by e-mail to psc@delaware.gov.
