Superhero 5K fundraising for local organizations, and honoring healthcare ‘heroes’

SEAFORD, Del. – Tri-Sports Events hosted another 5-K Saturday morning, and their ‘Superhero 5K’ was in support of two organizations; Kim and Evans Family Foundation, and the TidalHealth Nanticoke Indigent Drug Fund.
The Kim and Evans family foundation focuses on bettering the lives of disadvantaged people and animals in Sussex County and beyond while the Indigent Drug Fund supports hospitalized patients who can not afford their discharged medications.
While Tri-Sports gives the space for organizations to fundraise, runners tell 47 ABC, it’s seeing how much community support there is during these types of events that really brings the overall message to the finish line. “It’s nice to come out, to run with the docs and nurses and all our coworkers and especially with COVID it’s been pretty hard,” says a health care worker and participant, Stephanie Spurrier. Anita Lineweaver-Kinnikin, another participant and health care worker adds, “I also feel like we’re all superheroes, we’re just out here together and the commodore is wonderful.”
Lineweaver-Kinnikin tells us she worked with Dr. Joseph Olekszyk, a Nanticoke Physician Hall of Fame member who devoted his life to taking care of the community and hospital. The TidalHealth Nanticoke Indigent Drug Fund was created in his honor. Lineweaver-Kinnikin says, “It’s just an honor to run in honor of him because he was just a great person.”
