Police: Delmar man charged in fatal hit and run crash
DELMAR, Del. – A Delmar man is behind bars following a hit and run that claimed the life of a Mardela woman Thursday evening.
Police say just after 6 p.m., a 2004 Ford F250 pickup truck was traveling southbound on Susan Beach Road. The truck stopped at the intersection of Delmar Road for a posted stop sign, intending on continuing south onto N. Spring Hill Road. At this time, a 1999 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on Delmar Road, approaching the same intersection. The Ford then entered the intersection, directly into the path of the Honda, and collided. The Honda then spun off the roadway into the grass, where the passenger side hit a utility pole.
The truck reportedly failed to stop at the scene and began driving eastbound on Delmar Road. A Delmar Police officer found the vehicle on East Pine Street and was able to take the driver, identified as 22-year-old Luke Figgs, into custody.
The 30-year-old Mardela woman driving the Honda was taken to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional by ambulance, where she died as a result of her injuries. Identification is pending notification of next of kin. There were also two passengers inside of the Honda, ages 4 and 29, who were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
Figgs was not injured and held at the Wicomico County Detention Center on DUI and other traffic related charges in Maryland. Police say there is an active warrant in Delaware for vehicular homicide, two counts of second degree vehicular assault, and numerous other traffic charges. Figgs will be arraigned on these charges once he is extradited back to Delaware.
