“Let’s not wait until it’s too late for an event:” Lawmakers pushing for a bill to protect Delawareans from bombs

DELAWARE – Some lawmakers are pushing to pass legislation to further protect Delawareans against explosive devices.

Senate Bill 219 provides the courts, law enforcement, and prosecutors with additional tools during times of civil disorder. The act will enhance on the existing law by making it a crime to unlawfully manufacture, transfer, or possess, during a civil disorder event, a bomb, incendiary device, Molotov cocktail, or device designed to explode. It would also make it a crime to throw, launch, or use an activated bomb or explosive device during a civil disorder event.

Overall, the bill is to make Delaware’s law consistent with federal law.

“So, I think it was looked at what is Delaware law say now, let’s not wait until it’s too late for an event, let’s look at what we are doing, let’s look at some things in other states and then find out Delaware’s law was not consistent in definition with federal laws,” Representative Ruth Briggs King said.

Rep. Briggs King said the bill started in the Senate and she signed on to it as a sponsor in the House.

And where it stands now, she hasn’t heard of any opposition to the bill.
