“Latino Family Literacy Program” proves to be a success for North Georgetown Elementary families

DELAWARE– North Georgetown Elementary is giving students and families more tools to success.

The school completed its first cohort of the “Latino Family Literacy Program.” It’s a 10 week program designed to improve both English and Spanish literacy and language skills.

Each week, families were given a new book. Parents were then given activity ideas they could take home and practice with their kids. The school said this program gives back the things kids are missing at home.

“With the literacy and the rich language environment we provide our students here we are now able to work with community members to now really extend that into the community,” Sarah Green, the Assistant Principle, said.

“The goal is really just to have literacy in the homes, a lot of our families they might not know what to do or how to best support their kids,” Jennifer Nein, the EL Coordinator, said.

“Parents were so appreciative and they were so willing to do everything that we had spread out for them the activities,” Abby Cortez, the Bilingual School Community Liaison, said.

The school will be starting their second cohort of this program on April 4th. Parents from the first cohort will have the opportunity to be mentors for the new parents entering the program.
