Dr. Donna Patterson on the late Madeleine Albright

DELMARVA – In light of the passing of Madeline Albright, 47 ABC spoke with Dr. Donna Patterson, Professor and Department Chair of History, Political Science and Philosophy at Delaware State University as she had a personal connection to Mrs. Albright.

They first met in 2004 but began working together at Albright’s alma mater, Wellesley College through the Albright Institute.

Getting to know Albright on both a personal and professional level, Patterson noted her knowledge and proficiency to be well versed on various issues, giving her the ability to command any audience. On the other hand, when she wasn’t grilling diplomats,  she describes her as approachable, humorous, and relaxed.

Patterson continued by saying her passing is not only a loss for the political status she held but also the historical importance of being the first woman secretary of state.

“Seeing what she was able to do, becoming the first woman secretary of state in the united states, what that meant to someone like me personally when that happened knowing that a woman could do this but also what that meant for generations of women in the country,” Patterson said.

Patterson also told us that Albright was passionate about fighting for equal opportunities for women, and encouraged them to continue shattering glass ceilings, which was the focus of the Albright Institute.

Albright was a trailblazer whose legacy won’t be forgotten, and Patterson says Albright was still very active up until her passing doing various talks, zoom meetings, and staying up to date on social issues.
