BERLIN, Md. – Fire officials say improperly discarded smoking materials are to blame for an apartment fire in Berlin Monday morning.

At around 5:25 a.m., the Berlin Fire Company was alerted of a fire at the Ocean’s East Luxury Apartment complex, located at 9892 Shore Break Lane. Crews arrived on scene to find fire and smoke conditions on a 3rd floor balcony. A neighbor living in the complex used a portable fire extinguisher to knock down the majority of the fire before firefighters entered the unit.

Worcester County Fire Marshals investigated the blaze and say it was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. No injuries were reported.

Fire marshals are reminding the public to properly dispose of smoking materials in non-combustible containers with a lid and to make sure they are completely out before leaving the area.
