Assateague Island N.S. sees record visitation in 2021

BERLIN, Md. – Assateague Island National Seashore saw a record number of more than 2.6 million visitors to its Maryland and Virginia units in 2021.

Officials say this puts Assateague Island 33rd among the 380 National Parks reporting visitation numbers, and ahead of iconic locations such as Mount Rushmore, Bryce Canyon, and Shenandoah.

Summer visitation increased slightly over a record-breaking summer of 2020, but much of the increase came during the spring and fall.

44 National Park units recorded record visitation in 2021.
