FELTON, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a crash that killed two and injured three others Sunday evening.
Shortly after 6 p.m., police say a 2007 Hyundai Accent was traveling eastbound on Irish Hill Road, west of Blaine Drive. A 2010 Toyota Corolla was traveling westbound on Irish Hill Road, directly behind a large pick-up truck, approaching the same location as the Hyundai. The Toyota entered the eastbound travel lane in an attempt to legally pass the truck, but reportedly pulled right into the path of the Hyundai. Both vehicles tried to avoid hitting each other by veering off the south edge of the roadway, but ultimately hit each other head-on as a result. Both vehicles were forced in a southwesterly direction, spun, and came to rest in the field off the roadway.
The 36-year-old female driver of the Hyundai was not properly restrained, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and identification is pending notification of next of kin. There were two other passengers inside of the Hyundai that were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries.
The 18-year-old male driver of the Toyota was also not properly restrained and was taken to the hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. Identification is pending notification of next of kin. There was one passenger inside of the Toyota that was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Police say this crash remains under investigation.
