Maryland environmental advocates tackle plastic pollution on the shore

MARYLAND, – An environmental advocacy group is working to stop plastic pollution on the eastern shore.

The Lower Eastern Shore Group of the Maryland Sierra Club is hosting their free Plastic Pollution & Solutions event.

The 2-part event will include a viewing of the film, The Story of Plastic as well as a panel discussion about plastic pollution and potential solutions to the crisis on the shore.

Panelists include a variety of environmental activists, business owners, and Salisbury Mayor Jake Day.

Organizers say they’re concerned about the amount of plastic littered on roadways,  which can potentially hurt animals and even the ground water. “Sometimes the animals are eating those plastic bags and that can cause them to have obstructions and all kinds of problems. So that’s a big issues,” Lower Eastern Shore Group Chair Cindy Dillon said. “The problem is that the plastic that’s all around is breaking down into chemicals and leaching into our water, the ground water. We are having problems by taking in a huge amount of plastic ourselves.”

Dillon also says that only 9% of the plastic we think is being recycled, actually gets recycled and that most of it ends up in a landfill.

The last day to register for the event will be Tuesday, February 8th. If you’d like to find out more information or to register click here
