Local group hosts discussion of untold slavery stories in Southern Delaware
LEWES, Del. – In light of Black History Month, one group is hosting an event to share untold stories of slavery in Southern Delaware.
The Lewes Historical Society is hosting the virtual Underground Railroad In Sussex County discussion and exploring slavery before the American Civil War.
The conversation is based on research over the last two years in collaboration with many volunteers and the African American Heritage Commission in Lewes.
The society says many underground railroad escape routes are still being discovered today right in Delaware, and that this talk will give community members a new perspective on the history that surrounds them. “The underground railroad a lot of times is put forth as a silver lining that these people escaped, and yes they did. But you have thousands of escapees amongst millions of ensalved,” Lewes Historical Society Director of Education Marcos Salaverria said.
“Those who reached freedom, they’re stories have to be told because there are many others who sought freedom and were recaptured. Never heard from again and those stories are lost to us.”
That event will be Wednesday, February 23rd. If you’d register for the event click here
