“I really think the council made the right decision:” OC Council approves body-worn camera contract

OCEAN CITY, Md.- The town took another step to get police body-worn cameras into place.

Mayor Rick Meehan said in a council meeting this week they approved the Axon Contract for the Ocean City Police Department body cameras.

We’re told the police department has been working on this whole process since August. They chose to go with Axon for a few reasons.

Mayor Meehan said this is the company widely used by other agencies in Worcester County and price was a factor.

And, now with the contract moving forward he feels this was the right call.

“I really think the council made the right decision to move forward and to do this in a timely manner, not wait, but to address an issue that we now needs to be addressed and get everybody on board and sometimes you just keep moving forward and you do it and when you get there you know its time,” Mayor Meehan said.

The vote to approve the contract was 5 to 1. Mayor Meehan said as a whole everyone agreed with the move, but one council member was concerned about being able to work with the states attorneys office and making sure everybody had everything in place.

The goal is to have the cameras and equipment within the next 30 days, and to hopefully have the cameras on the streets in the beginning of June.
