“Believe in yourself, don’t shut yourself down.” Boomerang Community Outreach holds first annual Black History Month celebration

SEAFORD, Del. – A new Delaware non-profit is making sure children and families can overcome adversity. “I feel like what I take pride in being an African American is that we’re resilient and that’s what I kind of build my organization on,” says Danecia Page, founder of Boomerang Community Outreach Inc.

Boomerang provides preventative resources, whether it be through strengthening familial bonds, personal development, or getting support from community partners. “Things that might be able to typically knock you down but we’re just here to provide motivation and encouragement to help you achieve holistic success,” says Page.

Right now, the organization is focused on the youth and while founder Page put on her first black history month celebration, she also had a very important task for her kiddos in the Self-Confident, Winning, Appointed Go-getters Youth program, otherwise known as SWAG.

The youth presented biographies of important historical figures in African American culture. “When I finally got to write about Harriet Tubman, it felt super good because I know where I’m from. I know where people in the world are from,” says Camylah Jones, a part of the SWAG Youth Program.

Youth members say, the program truly gives them a positive outlook on their lives while also providing life-long connections. “Usually they know what stuff I go through because they’re mainly the same age as me,” says Krystiana Mason, another SWAG Youth member. Malyah Mitchell, another member adds, “Ella Baker once said she was like a really strong person, she once said that strong people don’t use strong leaders.” “Believe in yourself, don’t shut yourself down, always look up to God, and be your own person,” says Nadia Page, another member.

Founder Page says, her passion for the youth and the work her organization is doing speaks volumes. “But to see them get up there and rock it out as they did, it just speaks to everything that our organization stands for.”

Page also tells us, she wants to expand the organization and operate as a full-time youth program.
