SECU MD offering scholarships to help get more students enrolled

MARYLAND – As college enrollment numbers continue to dip, some organizations say they’re stepping it up to get more students enrolled.

SECU Maryland Credit Union says there’s been a 6.5% percent decrease in undergraduate enrollment, mostly due to the pandemic and its economic impact. Now they’re working to provide more scholarships to help offset some of those costs that could be preventing students from applying.

SECU MD is offering $115,000 in scholarship money for undergraduate and graduate students. The scholarship program is open to all SECU members who will be attending a two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school for the Fall 2022 semester for either undergraduate or post-graduate work regardless of whether classes are virtual or in-person.

Sarah Ryan, Assistant Vice President of Community Engagement at SECU Credit Union and Director of the SECU MD Foundation says they don’t want the cost of college to be a barrier for prospective students. “Students are more likely to go to college and universities and pursue higher education if they have a comfort level that their parents can pay for it,” says Ryan. She adds, “We hope to give them a strong financial start and empower them to really enrich their future and make a difference in their communities across the world and this program allows us to do that.”

Ryan adds that you do have to be a SECU MD member for the scholarship, but they’ve made qualifications easier so more students can apply. The deadline to apply is May 8th.
