Teackle mansion engages community members for the New Year
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Somerset County Historical Society, welcomed the New Year by going back in time. Community members were invited to an open house at one of Maryland’s historical treasures the, Teackle Mansion. “Here’s an opportunity for them to come and see the house but also to learn a bit of what I would say is their history,” says Sallie Ridgway, a member of the historical society who also portrays the mansion’s namesake, Mrs. Teackle.
Ridgway tells us, she and other volunteers are working to preserve what life was like in the mansion, 200 years ago. “I think the house itself is a beautiful example not just of the architecture, but because we have been able to explore all the letters that Mrs.Teackle and many that her husband and daughter and friends wrote,” says Ridgway. She adds, “For that moment when you step into a room maybe you can imagine what life was like a little bit during that particular period.”
Daryl Newhouse, a community member tells us, she often visits to learn about the rich history of the mansion and gets to learn a valuable lesson each time. She says it’s even more important for children to get involved in the rich history as well. “They get to see a slice of life from the past, how things were done, how the food was cooked, what kinds of games and activities the children performed,” says Newhouse. She adds, “You do learn a lot about what’s going on in the current world by learning about history, and history does repeat itself.”
We’re told, these pieces of history are only preserved because of the work the historical society does. “The people that are in costume here, the people that are docents here, they are very committed to this community in many ways,” Newhouse.
Newhouse also tells 47 ABC, learning about the past could help us better prepare for the future. “It also gives us hope, learning that we’ve come through some of these things has given us hope that we can do it again.”
