Much needed funding headed for the lighthouse for repairs
LEWES, Del. – A nearly century-old lighthouse will soon see some much-needed repairs after receiving some funding.
U.S. Senator Tom Carper helped to make this happen and the $250,000 will help the army corps of engineers make these repairs. We’re told the breakwater adjacent to and supporting the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse has been breaking away, threatening the stability of the harbor that lights the way for ships coming into the canal. “Saving a lot of lives, moving a lot of commerce, but it’s also just something that people like to visit and to see so for all those reasons, we think it’s something that’s well worth preserving,” says Sen. Carper. John Kane, Senior Policy Advisor on the Environment & Public Works committee adds, “So we’re going to start with getting this breakwater study so we can figure out what needs to be done to get more stable and we’re going to move on to figuring out what that construction need actually is.”
Once the lighthouse is surveyed and studied for what needs to be done, additional funding will come to help make repairs.
