Local man searches for missing boater after going through similar tragedy

MARYLAND – We’re sharing more news of a tragic story we’ve been following.

Ernie Sigmon, an Ocean Pines boater, went missing on the Chesapeake Bay back in December 2021. Now, Kevin Mezick is stepping in to help, after losing his brother Erik Mezick in a similar way.

Erik was a Fruitland man who died after his truck plunged into the Chesapeake Bay. His brother Kevin spent months searching for his brother until his body eventually washed up on a beach.

Oddly enough, Ernie and Erik went missing around the same time, a year apart. Now Kevin is taking action by helping the Sigmon family.

So far, he’s taken his boat out on the water three different times even in freezing conditions. And from his experience he says it’s hard to stomach the unimaginable.

“I mean it’s difficult, it’s an empty feeling I mean just knowing he’s out there in that cold water, it’s just an awful feeling,” said Mezick.

Mezick tells 47 ABC he will continue to help the family in any way he can.

In the meantime, if you see something, you are urged to reach out to the Maryland Natural Resources Police at 410-260-8888
