Harriet Tubman mural project growing, funding on the way
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The Alpha Genesis Community is getting some much-needed funding for a project involving the Harriet Tubman mural.
Through capital grant funding, The Alpha Genesis Community Development Corporation will receive $250,000 to assist with the acquisition, planning, design, construction, and renovation of a new pavilion.
We’re told this will make it more accessible and create a better learning experience for community members. Leaders from the group say they want to make the mural a staple of the community. “Wrapping art around it softens the conversations that we need to have and I know that this is a beacon project for the entire country moving forward,” says Executive Director of the AGCDC, Jermaine Anderson. He adds, “This is an opportunity and a blessing all at the same time.”
Meanwhile, Adrian Holmes, President of the AGCDC says they’re still creating the master plan, but with this funding, they can move forward and continue shining a light on Cambridge and its rich history. “This is the opportunity for people of different ethnicities to tell their own stories to retell it through black and brown skin,” says Holmes.
The group will also be putting a statue of Harriet Tubman in the fall on the Dorchester County courthouse lawn.
