Delmarva takes on first heavy snowfall of the year

MARYLAND- “I didn’t check the weather, so I had no idea this was happening but its really pretty but a little scary,” Sydney Lewis, a driver, said.

As snow pushed into the area Monday morning, Blankets of snow covered Maryland roads and streets.

“I mean we haven’t seen this, I mean the last year was kind of dry, but I mean its been a couple of years since we’ve seen roads in these conditions,” Sgt. Scott Christopher, with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, said.

“We had snow one time and it was really bad and couldn’t hardly get out, but it hast been that bad,” Lisa Dorsey, a local, said.

Maryland Department of Transportation said they’ve been preparing for this weather as of late Sunday with snow plows and salt trucks lining the roads throughout the state to help out as road conditions continue to change.

“We are concerned about it getting slippery now, we’re dealing with rain and sleet and we’re concerned about it getting slippery, in temperatures like this such as your bridges, ramps, overpasses those tend to freeze first, so if people do go out we want them to use extra caution in those areas,” Shantee Felix, a spokesperson for MDOT, said.

Traveling to Dorchester County, traffic started forming behind the snow plows and salt trucks.

And, according to the Dorchester County Sheriffs Office they’re seeing accidents.

“We’ve been pretty much patrolling, finding stranded drivers, you know we have been working out there,” Sgt. Christopher said.

And while it may look like a winter wonderland, officials are predicting conditions will get worse

So, they say just please don’t drive.

“We are advising people if possible if they can please stay off the roads and let our crews clear the roads for them,” Felix said.

MDOT, as well the Dorchester County Sheriffs Office said they will continue to monitor these conditions.
